Guide to fix Black screen when launching World of Warcraft.

1 post in this topic

Greetings Firestorm community!

This guide applies only to following issues:

  • The game seems to crash, but music is still playing.
  • When I open World of Warcraft I only get a black screen.

If you encounter a black screen at startup or during gameplay, follow the steps below to solve the problem:

1) Reset your UI to default settings

  1. Completely exit World of Warcraft.
  2. Open World of Warcraft folder
  3. Rename the Cache, Interface, and WTF folders to CacheOld, Interfaceold, and WTFOld.
  4. Re-launch World of wacraft so the changes can take effect.

2) Overlay incompatibilities can cause black screens and crashes. Your overlay programs may need to be updated or disabled to resolve the issue, such as:

  • Airfoil
  • EVGA Precision
  • Mumble
  • Taksi
  • NZXT CAM
  • Dxtory
  • MSI Afterburner
  • RadeonPro
  • Xfire
  • Discord (overlay)

3) Update your drivers to resolve any compatibility issues

4) If your game is using DirectX 12, try switching to DirectX 11. If WoW is using DirectX 11, try switching to DirectX 11 Legacy. Go to your World of Warcraft Folder > WTF > open config.wtf with notepad and find the line that says (SET gxAPI “d3d11”) and change it to (SET gxAPI “d3d12”) if it says (SET gxAPI “d3d12”) then change it to (SET gxAPI “d3d11”).

5) Start the game in windowed mode:

  1. Open your World of Warcraft Folder.
  2. Open the WTF folder.
  3. Open “Config.wtf” with notepad.
  4. Find the line that says (SET gxWindow) and make sure it's written as (SET gxWindow "1").
  5. Restart the game

Tried everything above?
