PvE: Avatar vs. Bloodbath and Storm Bolt

3 posts in this topic

I wanted to compare these talents to each other because I've seen too many warriors jumping into SoO with Avatar. Most guides tell you that Avatar is shit and depending on your spec Bloodbath or Storm Bolt is the way to go. But why?

Avatar vs. Bloodbath

This is an easy comparison. We can directly compare these two because they increase damage over time.

  • Avatar: 20% increase for 24 seconds with a 180 second cooldown
  • Bloodbath: 30% increase over 12 seconds with a 60 second cooldown

Let's find the average damage increase by taking cooldown*increase/duration.

  • Avatar: average 2.22% increase over 3 minutes
  • Bloodbath: 6% increase over 1 minute; 18% increase over 3 minutes

Basically, Bloodbath naturally does nearly three times as much damage in one third the time or nearly 8 times as much damage in the same amount of time. The only way Avatar can ever be better than Bloodbath is if you don't plan on continuing the fight for longer than Bloodbath lasts (it lasts 18 seconds). Since we're talking PvE here, that means you can use it only to show off on trash. From here on out, Avatar is kicked out of this comparison for being terrible. In fact, it's so terrible that it had to have its cooldown halved in WoD and it still sucks.

Bloodbath vs. Storm Bolt

These two are pretty much never in competition because it's either you take one or the other and never think about it again. Arms Warrior is often said to prefer Bloodbath. Fury is said to prefer Storm Bolt. Why?

Storm Bolt is heavily dependent on your weapon and its true form shines when you have two two-handed weapons. Therefore, it's really only good for Titan's Grip Fury, aka almost everyone in PvE nowadays.

Bloodbath isn't reliant on anything but whatever you cast inside its 12 second window. Therefore, it's the only the choice for Arms and Single-Minded Fury because they don't have the benefit of strong weapons or even just a second weapon. As well, it's great for AoE encounters because Storm Bolt hits only one target.

Best for PvE on Fury Warrior you have Bloodbath/Storm Bolt on (Tier6) LVL90 talent.

Bloodbath: Bloodbath - LVL90 - (Tier6) Talent

From Icy-Veins (Fury Warrior Tier6):
Number wise, Storm Bolt and Bloodbath are the only 2 viable options. For TG, Storm Bolt barely outclasses Bloodbath and should be your default choice for 5.4 (Though BB is close enough that you shouldn't fare too bad if you prefer to keep it). If you decide to take Storm Bolt you'll want to use it on cd even though half the uses won't benefit from CS.
For SMF, you will want to keep bloodbath until you get the CD reduction trinket (Evil Eye of Galakras), and at least the Flex version (LFR one won't cut it). In that case, you should take Stormbolt, as it will line up with every Colossus Smash for massive damage.

Verdict: For SMF: Bloodbath, unless you have Flex+ Evil Eye of Galakras trinket, then go Storm Bolt. For TG: Storm Bolt or Bloodbath until Galakras trinket, then Storm Bolt.

That's what I said, besides the Tier 16/trinket thing because we're not there yet.
